What a Yacht Day Actually Looks Like

A yacht charter in San Diego is one of the best ways to spend a bachelor party day — private, contained, and impossible to top. Your group has the boat to yourselves, you're on San Diego Bay with Coronado and downtown in every direction, and nobody's fighting for a table or yelling over a DJ they didn't pick.

Most charters run 3–6 hours out of Harbor Island or Shelter Island. The captain handles everything on the water side. What you bring — the drinks, the food, the vibe — is mostly up to you, though plenty of companies offer add-ons for all of it.

The short version: book early, know your group size, and don't cheap out on the cooler situation.

What It Costs

Pricing in San Diego varies by boat size, duration, and what's included. Here's a realistic breakdown for 2025:

$600–$1,200 Entry level. 40–50 ft boat, 3–4 hour charter, up to 12 guests. BYOB, basic crew. Good for smaller groups keeping costs tight.
$1,200–$2,500 Mid-range. 50–70 ft yacht, 4–6 hours, up to 25 guests. Often includes a bartender. Most popular range for bachelor parties of 10–20.
$2,500–$5,000 Premium. 70–100 ft motor yacht, full crew, catering options, DJ hookup. Groups of 20–40. The move when budget isn't the constraint.
$5,000+ Full-day or overnight charter on a 100+ ft vessel. Multi-day trips to Catalina or down to Mexico. If someone's asking, this is the Baller Experience.
Best Man Tip
Always ask what the "base price" includes vs. what's extra. Fuel surcharges, gratuity (typically 15–20% of charter cost), and docking fees can add $300–600 to the total. Get the all-in number before you commit.

Picking the Right Boat

The single biggest mistake groups make is booking a boat that's too small. The legal capacity and the comfortable capacity are very different numbers. A boat that fits 20 legally can feel cramped with 15 people, coolers, and a speaker.

Rule of thumb: book for 70–80% of the listed capacity. If it's rated for 20, it's comfortable for 14–16.

Boat types to know:

Motor Yachts — Most common for bachelor parties. Spacious decks, steady ride, good for groups that want to socialize rather than sail.
Sailing Yachts — Slower pace, more intimate. Great for smaller groups (6–10) who want a true sailing experience. Less party, more vibe.
Sport Fishing Boats — If the groom fishes, this is the call. Half-day or full-day offshore trips. Different energy entirely.
Pontoon / Party Boats — Lower price point, great for flat-water cruising. Less impressive but gets the job done for groups on a budget.

What to Add On

Most charter companies offer add-ons. Worth knowing what's available before you assume you have to source it yourself:

Private bartender on board (typically $200–350 for a 4-hour charter)
Catered food — charcuterie, sandwiches, full meals depending on the company
Bluetooth speaker systems / aux hookup (most boats have this standard)
Water toys — paddleboards, inflatables, snorkel gear if you're anchoring
Professional photographer or videographer for the day
Sunset timing — costs a bit more but worth it if the dates line up
What We Handle
When you book through Sendoff Ventures, we source the right boat for your group size and budget, confirm all-in pricing upfront, coordinate any add-ons, and build it into the rest of your weekend itinerary. You don't have to call five charter companies and compare quotes — that's on us.

When to Book

Summer weekends (June–August) book out 8–12 weeks in advance. San Diego is one of the most popular bachelor party destinations in the country, and the best boats go fast.

Spring and fall are more forgiving — 4–6 weeks is usually enough lead time. The weather is still excellent, the crowds are smaller, and prices are often 15–25% lower than peak summer.

Last minute (2 weeks or less): still possible, but your options narrow significantly. Let us know ASAP and we'll see what we can pull.
